Best of Paris Fashion Week

Lanvin SS11

Alber Elbaz produced a truly stunning SS11 collection for Lanvin that had something for everyone.

It started off strong, showcasing dramatic dresses with flowing skirts that had so much grace, flounce, and movement that the models appeared to be walking through a wind tunnel. It then seemed to alternate between clothing with flowing skirts and lots of movement to more contained, tight-fitting outfits. One thing can be said about the dresses: they look complicated. Not complicated to wear, but complicated to design. The creative drape and fold of the dresses reminds one of Indian saris. Yet, while some were more complicated than others, the simplest pieces were refreshingly youthful and optimistic.

Some of the best surprises in the show were contrast dresses. Viewed from one side, you think you are seeing a gray, long sleeve, silk dress. Viewed from another side it appears to be an ochre shift dress. There were also minimalistic one-shoulder dresses, clothing decorated with mirrored embellishments (like Indian tapestries), chiffon neck wraps, and leather suspender/belt details that gave their outfits a business-like exterior. There were a few wonderful pops of color in shades of neon yellow and fuchsia, which sealed the deal in making this a collection for the bold and the beautiful.
