Best of Paris Fashion Week

Miu Miu SS11

To understand the subtlety of Miu Miu’s Paris show, one “had to be there.” Primarily because the soundtrack (the theme song from American Idol) carried the message. Miucca Prada, the designer behind Miu Miu and also designer of her eponymous and celebrated Prada line, likes to hide social messages in her collections. This time, the star-spangled skirts and over-the-top bulky jackets spoke of celebrity.

Flower appliqués adorned the clothing which came in a variety of silks, block coloring and abstract geometric prints. The simpler, black dresses even had latticework tops across the model’s décolletage. There was a lot of attention paid to strong shoulders. One favorite accessory for spring made its way into the collection: the skinny belt. Miu Miu’s version came in neon greens and bright reds. This was a highly stylized show, with one bold, bright look after another.

The impetus behind the showy, starry collection? Said Miucca Prada, “I was thinking about everybody's obsession with being famous.” Our modern culture of celebrity was apparently Miu Miu’s cause célèbre.
