Best of Paris Fashion Week
Valentino SS11
Valentino is known primarily for two things: sweeping ball gowns, and the signature Valentino red. Only the latter made its way into this collection. The intricate ball gowns were gone, replaced instead with precious chiffon and lace dresses. This was an absolutely darling collection that reminded one of fresh-faced boarding school girls in Switzerland.
The opening dress had cute bell sleeves and was cinched at the waist with a neat black bow. Polka-dot printed chiffon overlaid shift dresses and empire-waist dresses. Flats and clutches were the favored accessories, and they complimented the sweet, pretty clothing nicely. Decorated jabots and ruffles were seen on many of the outfits. Everything was chic and the last few pieces on the runway managed to radiate retro Italian charm.
Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, who took over the Valentino house after Alessandra Facchinetti in 2008, are steering the label toward a younger audience. They achieved a beautiful, simple collection that was all about youthful femininity.
