Best of Paris Fashion Week

YSL SS11

Since 2004, YSL’s designer, Stefano Pilati, has given the world the beautiful sophistication of the label’s eponymous original designer. This collection was in keeping with its sophisticated roots.

The ubiquitous YSL trench coat starts the show in a blazing white shade, offset by black accessories. Following the trench come a series of pieces that were cut beautifully and had strong, body-skimming silhouettes like a black, 70s-inspired pantsuit and a black high-waisted skirt. Pilati had his collection under control, but he allowed for playful touches like an oversized silk blouse in screaming orange, fur skirts and jackets, and a generous splash of flamenco inspired dresses and skirts.

Like most designers on the Paris runway for spring, there were many outfits constructed of see-through chiffon. Somehow, the feeling that came across – even with the see-through material in full parade – was less “sexy” and more ladylike. Like Saint Laurent, Pilati never denies feminine strength and sexiness, but he lets the woman convey that, while the clothing simply acts as a catalyst for the message.
