New York Fashion Week Coverage

Derek Lam Fall 2012

Though the mood on the Lam runway, according to the designer, was more “thoughtful, quiet, and a little more somber”, elegiac it was not. There was still a vein of optimism that ran through this mercurial collection, which came in the form of 60s high school girl silhouettes and sparkly accoutrements.

The varsity jackets and prim blouses spoke to us from the past, but it was the leather pants and patent skirts that spoke from the present. While a few puffy parkas gave a “ski-bunny” feel to the outfits, this is still an undeniably wearable collection. One of the best looks was a glistening low-slung pair of cropped trousers that moved and sparkled like a rotating diamond. The show ended on a slightly occultish note, as the corrugated ripple sweater and black maxi chiffon skirt looked a little more edgy and witchy than we were expecting.
