New York Fashion Week Coverage

Victoria Beckham Fall 2012

There is something kind of heart-stopping about Victoria Beckham’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection with its symmetrical and plangent lines. Mathematical concepts of beauty rely on symmetry as a quantifiable explanation, and the crisp, smart, fuss-free outfits on the Beckham runway boast a lot of balance. The celebrity designer is not a new concept, but it is an interesting one. We are able to see the actualization of the celebrity’s signature style, but elevated to a new plane of creativity. Beckham collections very much resemble their owner, but let’s not forget she was once Posh Spice for a reason.

This season, body-hugging dresses cut clean lines against the urban horizon, and a touch of aloof preppiness provides the twist. There were few layers or jackets here, but the ones that did make it were the personification of relaxed chic. Beckham gets a gold star for her use of color – she didn’t go too monochrome, and the colors she chose were bold and rich. There doesn’t need to be commentary any longer about Beckham’s abilities as a fashion designer. We get it. It’s a little novel that she’s simultaneously designer and celebrity. But, the novelty has worn off and she remains an impressive inventor of her own look.
