Best of London Fashion Week

Mary Katrantzou FW11

by Grace Gordon

It’s hard to imagine any collection that is comparable to Mary Kantrantzou’s fall/winter 2011 collection. This artistic, high-concept show dazzled onlookers with a surfeit of surrealist images and vivid hues. The landscape of her collection was alive with brilliant patterns and tapestries. Rigidly structured dresses framed each piece like they were works of art.

The collection, when treated as a whole, reminds one of so many different influences: the busyness of a Hieronymus Bosch painting, the folk details of a Matryoshka doll, the decorative aspect of Rococo architecture, and the gilded glory of a Ming vase. This is interior decorating finery meant for the body. Exaggerated peplum skirts gave bell-shaped structure to each dress and garment. Not a stitch of this collection was overwrought, even considering the cheerful insanity of mixed patterns, materials and eras. This may just be the best collection at London Fashion Week.
