Best of Milan Fashion Week

Alberta Ferretti FW11

by Grace Gordon

Alberta Ferretti’s latest collection was rich with sequins, silk, velvet and sheer. With all of these elements combined in one outfit, she ended up with looks that were luxurious, and for the most part, practical. However, the show was clearly divided into two sections: the first showcased a modern take on the best of 1970s couture, while the second represented ephemeral gowns more appropriate for spring than fall. The downshift from daywear to eveningwear is abrupt, but conveys the message that Ferretti is in control of either medium.

In every collection, there is usually one element that steals the show. This time, it was Ferretti’s sumptuous, velvet, thigh-high boots. Some shimmered in plain peach, turquoise and purple; others were covered in climbing tendrils of gold brocade. When paired with silk shift dresses and sequined pieces in the collection, the models appeared to have walked on stage from another era. Ferretti also played with multi-colored print dresses – the best of which were highlighted by a branch of lightning that crackled down the front of the garment. Coat/dress hybrids came in heavier fabrics and plain, vivid colors topped with charming collars. When the eveningwear came, it was pellucid, dipped in crystals, and embellished with chiffon flower appliqués. The bifurcated nature of this collection worked well, as it clearly transmitted the dual spirit of a woman’s wardrobe.
