Best of Milan Fashion Week

Gucci FW11

by Grace Gordon

Gucci’s 90th anniversary collection was one part dandy, one part mobster wife and shot through with high-glam, luxury pieces. The main message was: strong lines, big shoulders. So far, Milan Fashion Week has been all about jewel tones, and no one has done it better than Gucci. This vivid collection focused on suit separates, diaphanous cut gowns, and big, big fur.

The thrilling aspect to this collection was the color combinations. Gucci designer, Frida Giannini, is known for pairing unexpected colors together, and she achieves surprising results this season. A lavender and mauve ensemble was topped with a rich ochre fur coat. She paired an electric tangerine cardigan with burnt umber skirt and an oversized lavender fur coat. Other color combinations like a gray suit, orange chub, mauve skirt, and black boots left one feeling dazzled. Sound daring? It was.

The sheer gowns in this collection were paired with oversized ruffled flower sleeves, or came in bipolar one-shoulder cuts. The accessories had a lot to offer in the way of python-print handbags and shoes in rich, beautiful shades of blue, yellow, pink and green. Fedoras and silk scarves were easy takeaways and can be incorporated easily into any wardrobe. For fall, Gucci urges you to embrace glamorous, colorful combinations unlike any you’ve ever attempted before.
