Best of New York Fashion Week

Thakoon FW11

by Grace Gordon

Thakoon’s collection was a real crowd pleaser, and it’s easy to see why. With electric patterns, bold prints, and snappy cuts, this democratic collection contained something for everyone.

Thakoon Panichgual is one of New York’s most promising young fashion designers who made a deep impression on the industry. Yet, it is this collection that is most reflective of his capabilities than previous ones.

He offers the viewer an encompassing global vision with his use of exotic African paisleys and floral batik prints. Influenced both by Kenyan tribes and Victorian courtesan fashion, Thakoon presents a striking balance between what is fashion forward and what is street wear. Different aspects of this collection appeal to different parts of our style DNA. When we want high fashion we can opt for the yellow-and-black all over ball skirt. When we want street style we can opt for the striped sweater and vertically striped maroon pants. Outerwear also received special attention on Thakoon’s runway. The coral-colored puffy peplum jacket and electric blue dressmaker’s coat are perfect toppers for fall. Voluminous proportions were reined in with tights belts and skinny pants. The messy symmetry, and sharp tucks and gathers of the dresses and skirts in this collection advanced the notion that Thakoon is a master tailor. This vivid and versatile collection made perfect used of mixed materials and patterns. Thakoon has ushered us auspiciously into the fall season, and we are willing followers.
