London Fashion Week Coverage

Christopher Kane Spring 2012

To view the Christopher Kane SS12 runway is to feel a familiar, strangling jealousy. Kane’s inspiration for the collection was “girls you hate at school” – and we all instantly know those girls he’s talking about. This collection melds boarding school secrets and whispered gossip with a haughty show of air that captivates and intrigues the audience like only the finest collections are able to do.

The simplicity of the looks – the sheeny brocade separates, the uniform-like sweaters, the exaggerated lapels and boxy shift dresses – belies a master hand at work. The real tell is in the ghost fabric – so named for its ability to appear at once there and not there. The layered ghost fabric dress is anchored to the present by rich flower appliqués that are so clear and bright as to look real. A plain monastic jacket when paired with decorated jeans slung low at the hip and slappy pool sandals looks fist-clenchingly cool on the Kane catwalk.

Though they might symbolically represent the kind of effortlessly cool girls at school that we all envied, it’s hard to hate them when we’re lucky enough to attain their looks come spring at any store that carries Kane’s RTW collections.
