London Fashion Week Coverage
Giles Spring 2012
The opening look at Giles was a streamlined, all-white suit, but one hardly noticed the perfect, easy lines of this ensemble because it was topped by a towering swan mask. Swan influences feathered the Giles runway in ornate, unusual looks, but they are not meant to be the central pieces to this collection. Instead, it is the dazzling, futuristic fringe, laser-cut dresses, and voluminous dresses that steal the show.
Giles Deacon’s use of metallic was especially interesting, given that the metallic suits and dresses he showed managed to look soft instead of hard. His effort with expert and strange design techniques brought an element of the experimental to the forefront – especially his use of laser-cutting intricate patterns into the clothes. A beige dress sprouted tufts of ombre lavender feathers to stunning effect, while sweeping silk caftans pulsed down the catwalk. Yet, it is the three blood-red dresses at the end of the show that deserve to be studied by fashion scientists in some all-white Lagerfeld designed underground lab. These jaw-dropping pieces should have been sent down the runway in slow motion so that the audience could drink in their intense craft.
