London Fashion Week Coverage
Julien Macdonald Spring 2012
Sometimes, a runway show can be almost distractingly flashy. Not so at Julien Macdonald, where the collection was viewed in such an intimate setting that one was able to see the clothes up-close-and-personal. This was not only welcomed, but necessary, as it was the details of this collection that made it special.
Slicked back Ken-doll hair, neon lips and opaque, blunt cornered sunglasses transmitted a powerful, almost masculine feeling on the Macdonald runway. This worked to give the clothing a hip, thrilling edge. Sharply tailored tuxedo blazers and vests framed the overlapping, origami-cut layers of the dresses and tops they were paired with. A shirred, off-kilter dress in nude showed a peek of black lining through a thigh-high slit. Graphic knits, woven with plastic thread, looked smashingly futuristic on Macdonald’s high-gloss runway. He dubbed this look “modernist glamour”, which he derived from the yachts at Monte Christo and Japanese design details. However, as fashion forward as this is, the suit separates are surprisingly work-friendly. The mix of the avant-garde and the wearable made this an intriguing SS12 collection.
