London Fashion Week Coverage
House of Holland Fall 2012
When we think of pop art’s intersection with fashion, it’s easy to conjure images from Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film “Blow-Up”, which featured the most cutting-edge fashion of that era. All those harsh angularities ran up against searing pop colors, and their starkness, brightened by roaring hues, made the garments seem distant, covetable, and latent with meaning. At the time, that was the New. In the present day, when Henry Holland takes on pop for his Fall/Winter 2012 collection, we get that same thrill. Here is the emergence of the new reified through the lens of the past. It’s a neat concept, but it’s also a head scratcher. Is this fashion imitating art, or art imitating fashion?
Aesthetic quandaries aside, this collection blew through London Fashion Week like a breath of fresh air. Fur and leather sleeves, and flared leather trousers added texture to Holland’s offerings. Houndstooth, chevron, and liminal stripes were made up in every color of the rainbow. These sizzling shades came down the runway on rompers, sweaters, jumpsuits, and crisp sheath dresses. While the color palette may have been extravagant, the clothing was subtle and confident.
