London Fashion Week Coverage

Marios Schwab Fall 2012

Marios Schwab keeps us on our toes this season. The first half of his collection is a paean to the great Marlene Dietrich, with models shrouded in mystery and shadows. The second half is a very modern return to what Marios Schwab does best: controlled chaos. With geometric patterns swirling across his dresses, Schwab reminds us that there is such a thing as intelligent design.

At the beginning of the show, it’s as if an old Hollywood starlet has walked right off the silver screen and onto the Schwab stage. The only instinct we have that this is the present and not the past is the intricate and interesting necklines of the dresses (those definitely aren’t vintage!). A spell is cast over this part of the collection, one that tells a hypnotizing tale of secret lust and tawdry rendezvous. Schwab shifts this tone halfway through, and we turn instead to the future where spirographs leak across the clothes in bright, sickly shades. Those sheer dresses near the end, however, are going to be the thing everyone remembers the most from this collection. They are both tough and breathtakingly delicate at the same time. Take a moment to drink in this collection. It’s the best one he’s ever done.
