Matthew Williamson Fall 2012
Matthew Williamson could have had a show that was comprised only of that first look – a lovely multi-colored fur coat, radiant gold trousers and a soft, dark blue top – and stopped there. We would have been satisfied. Thankfully, many dazzlers, all with his trademark embellishment and flare for retro-inspiration, follow that first look. However, this time, the bygone eras seem to harken from a further distance, as there is a thoroughly modern mood floating through this collection. It comes across most clearly in his sequined outfits. The placement of the sequins looked like the winking lights of computer circuitry.
Sharp cutaway tailoring and lean lines make this feel like a much more futuristic presentation. However Williamson employs the use of gold brocade on a dress and skirt that is a throwback to his wallpaper prints of yesteryear. There is always an elegant luxury to the bohemian-inspired designs on a Williamson runway, and this is one of his more desirable versions. It doesn’t sacrifice individual style at all, and still has enough neat visual oddities going on to keep it interesting.
