London Fashion Week Coverage

Moschino Cheap & Chic Fall 2012

Sometimes, a brand can resemble the city of their origin, and sometimes the fit is off. Moschino Cheap and Chic makes a savvy move to London Fashion Week where their whimsical prints, avant-garde themes, and witty self-referential presentations make more sense than at the typical Italian glamour fest that is Milan Fashion Week. The outré oeuvre created by Rossella Jardini is perfect in London’s idiosyncratic setting.

The theme this season was “Make Up Your Life”, which takes the term “make up” both literally (by printing the dresses and suit separates on the runway with cartoony blush pots, brushes, and lipsticks), and figuratively (by taking Jardini’s feeling that “Times are hard, so we have to use clothes to have some fun” to present the message that style has a lot to do with self-identity).

The prints we mentioned don’t distract from the sweet, peppy sartorial flair of this collection – a flair that neatly folds in the influence of mods in the 60s with rainbow-bright coats and dresses. Colorful patchwork lace skirts and oversized knit sweaters combine for a psychedelic effect. Times may be hard, but you’d never know it looking at the Moschino Cheap and Chic runway.
