Milan Fashion Week Coverage

Blumarine Spring 2012

Blumarine reminds us that first impressions can be deceiving. Designer Anna Molinari launches us into the lap of a Spanish harem at the outset of her Spring/Summer 2012 collection with belly-baring knotted tops, flamenco-inspired frocks, and a smattering of cheerful, floral abstract prints that danced their way across the skirts and bodices of several outfits (they looked like a fireworks explosion on one particular velvet off-shoulder dress). Then came the sea change.

After some sweet all-white dresses, the tone of the runway changed completely. It seemed that as the show progressed, more of the clothes came off. Teensy neoprene jackets and barely-there bikini bottoms comprised most of the looks, and if we thought the original prints were brightly colored, they got even brighter. The outfits, replete with big newsboys caps in neon shades, looked like something Jennifer Lopez would have worn in her days as a dancer on In Living Color, or like something Rihanna would wear now. The major flower prints turned 3-D when they were sewed on as appliqués and stuck every which way off of slinky dresses for voluminous appeal. From a romp in Spain to the Hawaiian tropics to the lively looks of a 90s back-up dancer, Blumarine zig-zagged us all across the style map.
