Bottega Veneta Spring 2012
Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2012 was heavy enough to feel like a fall collection, rather than the light airy confections expected of spring. With a serious mind, Thomas Maier tackles “urban chic” by imagining a woman who not only lives in big cities but also explores them with eyes wide open. He explores this concept through a jewel-toned color wheel of teal, cobalt blue, turquoise, royal purple, and burnished red along with earthier shades of brown or black.
The urban girl, as imagined by Maier, will wear bustier dresses, motorcycle jackets, faded denim, and fringe shawls. She’ll experiment with confetti-like decorations on sweaters and tops, and cut through the pack of queuing party girls in an inky black dress that sparkles like wet asphalt.
She’ll also favor the plissé skirt, which reoccurs several times on the Veneta runway, but comes in rich shades of mottled fabric that, from a distance, resemble crushed velvet. The miniscule pleats get expanded and exaggerated later on, transforming them into dramatically draped gowns with flowing chiffon skirts cut straight up to the thigh. Though these are looks better suited for colder climes, the richness and depth of this collection will not be lost on the serious fashion suitor.
