Gucci Spring 2012

Gucci has a knack, not for innovating a season’s looks, but for perfecting them. The collection they showed for Spring/Summer 2012 was rich and glossy – almost literally. This looked like a moneyed collection – if not only for the repeated use of the color green (the color of envy, the color of, well, money). And if that weren’t enough, it was all set against a slick background of black and white, with the models sporting white blonde up-dos and heavy black eye makeup. The message seemed to be that nuance is not found in shades of gray, but in shades of burnt orange and Kelly green.

Despite the ostentatious palette, the clothes stood out for their sporty/casual meets high-end glamour appeal. Most everything was trimmed in gold at the beginning of the collection, and then the heavy metals took over toward the end. The last half dozen looks were dripping in yards of glittery sequins in the form of drop-waist, flapper-esque frocks. Fringe was also a repeated detail, and looked especially keen on a sheer bathing suit cover-up whose hem dissolved into a dervish of fringe. Trim black and white jackets and extra-long trousers that bunched around the ankle provided the backbone of the collection. While Gucci doesn’t do anything under-the-radar, there was some subtlety to this show that added an air of enchantment to the clothes.
