Milan Fashion Week Coverage

Moschino Spring 2012

For Spring/Summer 2012, Moschino creative director Rossella Jardini looked to Spain and the Old West for influence. Moschino is a label that one relies on for both ample creativity and a tongue-in-cheek poke at the fashion industry. Though this collection is nowhere near as overt as the Bull Chic matador costume that made its way down the runway when Franco Moschino was still at the helm (the words “Bull Chic” were actually emblazoned on the back of the jacket), it’s a maverick collection that didn’t let up on the references it culled from.

The first look was a very literal interpretation of a matador costume, which rang with tiny bells as the model walked the catwalk. The bells, which found their way onto lots of the outfits in this collection, were perhaps signifying or enhancing the attention-grabbing aspects of these extreme looks.

Flamenco-inspired ruffles tripped down saffron dresses and spot-printed frocks. Silk bolero jackets, bull fighter hats, and oversized gold heirloom earrings were balanced by Old West inspiration in the form of suede fringe jackets, boots, and cowboy hats. The nicest touch here was the reticella lace that decorated several radiant silk dresses which was a nod to the costumes of the Spanish courts in the 1600s. This thoroughly thought-through and historically based collection was a delight to see, but will in reality sell as individual pieces rather than as entire looks.
