Versus Spring 2012
Time out! Ladies, take a knee while we discuss what just happened on the Versus runway. This was an unexpected turn from the design team of Donatella Versace and Christopher Kane, but we’ve learned to expect the unexpected – especially when it comes to these two. The show was set on a basketball court, the foul lines cheekily painted in shades of pastel. The looks were derived from the basketball itself, team jerseys, and cheerleader uniforms. Does it work? We’d been bereft of common sense to say it doesn’t. Somehow, they pulled this off, and it looks fabulous.
The clothes mostly came in pastel, sorbet shades of mint, pink, white, and pale yellow and there were lots and lots of sheer options on the runway. The piping on some of the silk, body-conscious dresses resembled the curving lines on a basketball, while the cut-out black and white dress was a modern take on the referee uniform. Cheerleader skirts were in abundance and whipped around the models’ toned legs. There was a recurring print on many of the outfits that resembled the scratches on a lie-detector print out. While the basketball/cheerleader influence was uproariously clever, the pieces in this collection were still wearable, cool and covetable. Who knows what’s in store for Fall? Another esoteric reference, or, may we suggest, hockey?
