New York Fashion Week Coverage
Helmut Lang Spring 2012
Helmut Lang, though notoriously cool and slick with its tried-and-true black/leather/sexy collections, is also known for another thing: clothes that are hard to keep on a hanger. All of the straps and draping get pretty complex and tangled, and this is one of the label’s most complicated collections to date. In fact, the clothes in this collection are so raw they look almost unfinished – like someone forgot to attach a sleeve or to pin a hem before sending a model down the runway.
This off-kilter collection just looks good. There are no frills here, just good design and interesting details. The asymmetrical straps on the layered bras were especially eye-catching, and so were all the bare midriffs. One look in particular was so sexy that it worked like a magnetic force of desire on the room: the all-white ensemble with the asymmetrical strap bra, super short draped skirt, white tights, and white boots topped off with that perfectly slouchy blazer was a miracle of sensuality. Nicole and Michael Colovos stayed away from the sporty prints everyone else is doing, and stuck to the Helmut Lang blueprint to great success. Expect to see this collection on only the coolest models, style bloggers, and editors in the business.
