Jason Wu Spring 2012
If this is Jason Wu "edgy" then what's Jason Wu "conservative"? While his SS12 collection was a little sexier than normal (a couple of sheer blouses and high-cut, thigh-revealing shorts were in the mix), the fact that Wu played heavily on 50s silhouettes kept his latest collection firmly grounded in the overall descriptive category "classic." Or at the very least, "classic Wu."
Wu managed to achieve a rare collection that appeals greatly to both younger and older generations of women. The slope-shouldered jackets, flower-printed trousers and gauzy outerwear are perfect for the older style set, while young women will love wearing the short-in-front/long-in-back skirts, eccentrically detailed blouses, and comely print dresses belted with slim, prim bow belts. The retro-inspired cigarette pants and belted, pleated, sleeveless top will appeal to everyone. Can't you just picture Mary Tyler Moore wearing that exact outfit on The Dick van Dyke Show?
The flower petal print in this collection is the result of Wu's collaboration with 90s graffiti artist, KAWS. This unusual meeting of the minds resulted in a very pretty, almost old-fashioned print that found its way onto many ensembles in this collection. Thought this print is darker, it belies the fact that it is printed on featherweight fabrics. Finally, Wu ended the show on a stunning note: fitted bodice dresses with wide, square-cut layered ruffles wowed the audience. From start to finish, this collection is wearable, sophisticated and completely apropos – classic Wu all the way through.
