New York Fashion Week Coverage

Marc Jacobs Spring 2012

Nary a Marc Jacobs SS12 review can go without mentioning his talks to assume the helm at Dior in John Galliano’s stead. And, yet, it his latest show that is the bigger spectacle. On the Marc Jacobs runway, the curtain was flung back to reveal the entire catwalk preening and mugging for the cameras like they were on the set of a Broadway musical. The era for this stage show was to be the 20s (with a hint of 40s influence thrown in for good measure).

The opening look was a trench cut with crisp lines, surrounded at the hip by tiny ruffle details. Following that, models came down the runway in drop-waist flapper dress regalia, plastic skirts and dresses, gleaming gingham, fringe skirts, cropped jackets, tapestry coats, and other 20s-inspired ensembles. The kerchiefs they wore were very reminiscent of 1940s Rosie the Riveter ad campaigns. And the plastic cowboy boots? They were just there to add a little bit of the unexpected to a fairly retro-inspired collection.
