New York Fashion Week Coverage
Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2012
Marc Jacobs is the type of designer for whom practicality often comes as an afterthought. The Marc by Marc Jacobs SS12 collection, however, was brimming with practical, simple, wearable pieces that could easily constitute quite a few of your necessary wardrobe basics. This is a surprising turn for a designer who tends to turn every runway collection into an excuse for a party.
Maybe he’s feeling the weariness of the urban city dweller, and the draw toward comfortable clothes that travel well (certainly there were some weary members of his audience for whom this collection resonated). What he showed were lots of sturdy clothes: solid colors, hearty fabrics (even the silks looked durable), and oversized construction. There were a few party frocks in the mix, like a patriotic peplum number, and a silky floral print dress that’s perfect for a summer wedding. Overall the pieces were simple and well-constructed – and with cited influences like Eames it’s no wonder.
