New York Fashion Week Coverage

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

Oscar de la Renta is changing things up by courting the youth crowd, and his signature high-drama magic is working on all the starry-eyed youngsters. Another reversal of de la Renta traditions is the fact that this season, he showed his most amazing “last looks” first. Instead of starting with his simpler confections, he thrusts the audience straight into the action with some high wattage taffeta ballgowns in eye-popping shades of mustard, lime, and brilliant red.

It’s not that this collection lacks cohesion – though, there is no clear “message” here – it’s that it’s so sprawling that it’s hard to pin down. He hits just about every major look: sheer layers, shimmering column gowns, gypsy/boho crochet, feather shoulders, fringe, floral prints, perforated leather, Victorian courtesan gowns, etc. With 62 looks total, he has a lot of room to be creative. The only unifying thread here is that every look is a winner. There are no missteps on the de la Renta runway. For spring according to OdlR, think radiant, youthful and gorgeous.
