New York Fashion Week Coverage
Prabal Gurung Spring 2012
Prabal Gurung has gone off the rails, and in a very good way. Gone are the breathtaking, shimmering gowns he’s so well known for, and in their place is a sensuous melding of the fetish and the feminine. Prabal Gurung’s recipe is something along the lines of wing of butterfly, strip of leather, feather of exotic bird, and print of flower. Add it all up together, and this magical collection is sheer witchcraft.
Why Gurung is abandoning a tried-and-true formula of red carpet worthy gowns is a mystery, but his new concoctions are genius. For SS12, Gurung envisions brightly hued abstract print dresses, crisp tuxedo blazers, imaginative cut-out detailing, sheer fabric overlays, shiny leather ombre trenches, and asymmetrical cuts and details. This dizzying array of details is a whisper of the new, and in Gurung’s deft hands, it looks like a rapid-fire bestseller.
