New York Fashion Week Coverage

Proenza Schouler Spring 2012

Season after season, Proenza Schouler is reliably one of the most anticipated shows of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for its consistently innovative and fresh approach to fashion. For SS12, Proenza Schouler showed a collection that is at once buttoned-up and boyish, deriving from an unusual but intriguing influence: 1970s interior decorating.

The show was launched by a trim suit top and matching shorts in a print that is reminiscent of 70s wood paneling. In fact, many of the prints and fabrics in this collection looked like upholstery. The collection played with proportions by mixing cropped sweaters with high-waisted shorts, and blown-out A-line skirts with slim tops. Eel skin was back on the Proenza Schouler runway this season, this time in the form of an exquisite striped/paneled dress. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have managed to turn midcentury modern furniture into a wearable spring/summer collection – and they’re one of the very few who could pull this off.
