New York Fashion Week Coverage
Ralph Lauren Spring 2012
Ralph Lauren is no relic, and the proof lies in the fact that he can do a nearly all-white collection for Spring that’s so fresh and brilliant that it sears the eyeballs. It’s pretty hard to keep white from becoming boring. However, the show opens with a lot of pastel and floral prints, and they dapple the collection in spots. These floral prints are very Laura Ashley-esque, even though the feel of the collection is straight from the WASP-y parties of The Great Gatsby.
The opening look is very bluntly a copy of Mia Farrow, from the palazzo pants and demure slouch to the cloche hat. His radiant whites came in a wide variety of styles: from the simplest dresses to the dandiest three-piece suits (complete with ascot). Ralph Lauren’s womenswear collection borrowed some very masculine looks, but kept them feminine with bias-cut tailoring. Additionally, there were some fur and feather options in the mix that elevated several looks to eveningwear status.
Lauren must be riding the tide of social influence at the moment. Our resurgence into the lifestyles of the Lost Generation seemed to have cycled back around, just like fashion does. And Lauren is there to tailor us in 20s refinement.
