New York Fashion Week Coverage

Thakoon Spring 2012

Thakoon, the reigning “Prince of Prints”, continues to earn his title with his latest collection. He also continues his cross-cultural theme from last season, but explores different regions and eras. For SS12, Thakoon is combining the best of the Old West with the brilliance of South Asia.

If the clothes from the musical Oklahoma! had a happy accident with the wardrobe from a Bollywood film and the resulting mix was spruced up with a Thakoon print, you’d have this collection. Dresses with yoke detailing were followed by embroidered shalwar kameezes. Two-tone hats, paisley prints and exaggerated silhouettes were everywhere.

This isn’t a nod to the past, instead this vibrantly hued and sumptuously patterned collection is almost futuristic with all of its shimmer and shine. Thakoon is a designer with rich resources – not the least of which is his imagination. The landscape of his mind and his curiosity about the world have resulted in a collection that is one of the best at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. There’s no doubt that he’s got staying power.
