New York Fashion Week Coverage
Anna Sui Fall 2012
For Fall/Winter 2012, Anna Sui presents a radiant, but paradoxical, collection. It is at once keenly individualistic, thoughtful, and unique. However, when one considers that these RTW looks will be manufactured on a mass scale, it’s hard to retain the descriptor “individualistic.” Sui’s storied career as a fashion designer has allowed her to draw influence from any number of sources. This collection is a fairytale populated by gypsies, hippies, geeks, autodidacts, peasants, and folksy folks. As the story unfolds, the madcap scene grows happier and warmer as colors and patterns become more dizzying and obscure. Whimsical is probably a close match when it comes to describing it all in a single word.
This fantasy births some truly fun looks: owl beanie caps with tassels are paired with bubbly bright print dresses, a varsity jacket is softened by velvet fabric, librarian-chic struts out in a tweed poncho and bright orange tights, and even the more grown-up eveningwear looks come in exciting shades and swirling fabrics. If this were to be translated as a bedtime story, it would fail to put anyone to sleep. This thrilling, cutting edge collection pumped some lifeblood into the New York Fashion Week season.
