New York Fashion Week Coverage
Helmut Lang Fall 2012
Helmut Lang designers Michael and Nicole Colovos showed on the first day of New York Fashion Week, and their collection looks resolutely forward. Incorporating signature details that the couple has accumulated over their 5-year career at Helmut Lang, this collection was a gritty, tough mixture of leathers and suede. It looked positively bulletproof.
The urban bravado of this collection matches the brand’s casually cool roots. Helmut Lang has all the associations of leather-wearing counter-culture hipness, but this was a more refined take. Moving easily from minimalist looks like slim trousers, thigh-high wedge boots and fitted blazers to maximalist swaddled layers, this show offers a lot of practical options for fall. Couple this nearly neutral collection with blurry organic prints in surprising shades, and you walk away with a new respect for the brand. With classic pieces to be found in spades, the real delight here is the modern twist offered by the Colovos duo.
