Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2012
Is Marc Jacobs a Gemini? Because that would explain his ability to show such contrasting dualities on the runway. We checked, however, and he is an Aries – which might serve to explain his flare for theatrics, if you believe in that sort of thing.
However, it’s notable how quickly he can change direction. From the high drama of his signature line to his smaller Marc by Marc Jacobs line, one could easily mistake these collections as coming from different designers. Of course, Marc by Marc Jacobs operates on a smaller budget, but the cheerful, madcap mood of his big line was entirely erased on the M by MJ runway for Fall/Winter 2012. In its place was a stripped-down version of big bloom prints, military-influenced outerwear, and headstrong, schoolgirl chic.
There is a bit of an authoritarian “chip on the shoulder” attitude in this collection, made apparent by the crisp jackets, jaunty hats, and strict lines of the attire. These are boot camp basics for the hipster army, and the feeling of waywardness associated with this idea makes it all the more enticing. Sweaters paired with midi-length plissé skirts, tweed pants, and rompers, and plaid capes and coats are a nod to the prep school crowd. Marc by Marc Jacobs has staked a claim in the youth market that’s not soon going anywhere.
