Marchesa Fall 2012
Marchesa tends to have a narrow focus. They don’t target a broad market, or aim to appeal to every type of consumer. Instead, their sweeping, red-carpet-worthy gowns are spun with breathtaking care, but ultimately have a kind of singular appeal. This season, Marchesa broadens their vision to include some wearable pieces. It’s a little funny that they’re bringing their ethereal looks down to earth for Fall/Winter 2012, especially considering that their inspiration is William Adolphe Bourguereau’s painting, “A Soul Brought to Heaven.”
There is a shimmering vitality to all of their lacey, art-deco, drop-waist dresses, but it is underscored by a current of darkness. Black patterns and blood red skeletal system embroidery are a macabre addition to this featherweight collection, adding a density that we have not seen on the Marchesa runway before. Yet, Marchesa’s signature look remains, and we are happy to swim through the yards of lace, tulle, chiffon, and satin that make up this stunning and auratic collection.
