New York Fashion Week Coverage
Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012
Fifty-plus years in the fashion business is enough to make any designer fussy and set in their ways. Not so with Oscar de la Renta. This 79-year-old designer is, perhaps, the most in-touch and savvy fashion designer in the entire industry. This season, de la Renta is putting a twist on youth outreach with his project #TheBoard that allows anyone to contribute ideas to his upcoming collection. The forethought this move indicates is what keeps Oscar ahead of even the most promising young designers.
This show was all printed silks and smiles, with models tripping lightly down the runway in fetching flats. From slim pencil skirts to voluminous ombré chiffon ball skirts, there were lots of silhouettes to choose from. With a hint of 60s sauciness, textured outerwear and twinsets kept the fall/winter theme. However, these heavy fabrics came in light, punchy colors like baby blue and blush pink, which kept things on the bright side. Bijoux-pendant photos were blown up and printed on many of the outfits, which gave this charming collection a decadent feel.
