New York Fashion Week Coverage
Preen Fall 2012
Trust the Preen design duo, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, to interpret the fall/winter mood in unexpected ways. Preen is always one to watch for their game-changing seasonal directions, managing to always put a unique spin on their own signature looks.
In the vein of last season’s influence (Virginia Woolf), Thornton and Bregazzi turn their attention to Beatrix Potter, and her garden. This collection married the prismatic colors of the lush English countryside with a bit of stern, buttoned-up garb that skews too youthful to be labeled “matronly”.
In her day, Potter was a bit of a rebel, which is why you shouldn’t be surprised to see an edgy, sheer blouse which they sent down the runway on a bare-chested model. The winning look here is the floral prints, that were vibrant and fetching especially when married to waist-cinching skirts and ladylike blouses. One outfit – comprised of a brilliant pair of red high-waisted trousers, a floral blouse, and a pair of muted olive wedges – looks like an instant trendsetter. In the final half of the show, Preen plays with geometric abstraction and hyperrealist graphics in the form of chain-link rectangles and liquid paint splashes so flawlessly printed as to appear real.
