New York Fashion Week Coverage
Proenza Schouler Fall 2012
Interesting clothes do not, by proxy, make their wearer more interesting, but they certainly help to maintain that illusion. Proenza Schouler consistently offers up some of the more enticing and complex creations that show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and none more so than this season. For Fall/Winter 2012, the duo behind Proenza Schouler, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, take the softness of Asian dress and toughen it up for a New York winter.
The protective quality of this collection comes through in the outerwear. Asymmetrical, oversized jackets and coats come with double-stacked lapels that lay languidly across the chest. Head-to-toe washed leather swishes down the runway in exaggerated proportions, reminiscent of 70s biker gear. Shift dresses get turned into samurai-worthy tunics in tough shades of black and oxblood red. Silk kimono cut jackets and tops get plumped out with padding, for a bigger silhouette. This is a menacing collection, but it steers clear of being overtly dark and unwearable. All that’s missing here is the katana.
