Theyskens' Theory Fall 2012
“More of the same” is the curse of any designer, which is why coming up with new ideas every season can be a bit tricky. Olivier Theyksens manages, however, to infuse his hyper-cool line for Theory with a bit of his signature magic, while managing to make old ideas seem fresh and novel. For instance, he hasn’t given up on the sheer skirt or the flared trousers that he popularized last year, but he has given them a makeover that make them just as tempting for fall.
Inspired by the idea of a woman visiting her ailing grandmother in New York, Theyksens pairs tough textures and fabrics with sheer, light pieces. This collection is heavy on the suede, leather, patent, and wool, but it marries these dense offerings with airy skirts and see-through blouses. Ombré shorts and pants are paired with robust leather jackets and outerwear for a look that is all about languid ease. The best part of the Theory show, however, was the fact that it was comprised almost entirely of neutrals and yet, it sparkled like a crystal.
