Paris Fashion Week Coverage
Balmain Spring 2012
Last season, Balmain was all but ignored by designer Christopher Decarnin. This season, the brand blooms under the watchful eye of new designer Olivier Rousteing. Rousteing, a protégé of Decarnin, kept the rock and roll and eschewed the only-for-the-kids mentality we’ve been seeing so much of from Balmain in previous seasons. The result? A tightly tailored, mature, but still edgy collection from a promising new designer.
There was an undeniable Spanish bullfighter influence on the Balmain runway, a theme that borrows heavily from the trend we saw repeatedly at Milan Fashion Week. Rousteing’s version came in crisp bolero jackets and toreador trousers. A lavish baroque print decorated many of the pieces in this collection, and came in a variety of embroidered and beaded textures. Rousteing also made brilliant use of leather, but kept the silhouettes he used tightly controlled. If we didn’t know better, we’d say this collection was the result of an experienced designer, not the work of a 25-year old newcomer.
