Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Giambattista Valli Spring 2012

The attire on the Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer 2012 runway was as gilded and (metaphorically) frosted as couture cupcakes, and with good reason. Valli stated that this season, he made clothes that men “would want to eat.” Stick a fork in these sensual delicacies, boys. Dessert is served!

Yet, for all the foodie allusions, the real influence on this runway was the memorabilia of travel, and Valli sampled details from around the world. The looked that launched the collection was a frothy Mongolian fur vest and front-slit leather skirt – the slit in the skirt mirrored the peep of torso revealed by the vest. Maribou feathers waggled from blouses and dresses, and brocade florals, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century wallpaper, were made into lavish pantsuits. Rainbow panels of glittering lamé spruced up drop-waist dresses, and ruffles that fluttered organically in the breeze of the model’s runway march provided a sensual touchstone. Car coats in shimmy shags, serpentine cuffs, jewel-encrusted heels, and a daisy eyelet cage dress were a few of the tastier confections. For all those men that admire and salivate over Valli women, tread carefully. This collection is saccharine enough to spike the blood sugar.
