Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Isabel Marant Spring 2012

If this collection makes you pine for some existential something, we can help by supplying the who’s and what for’s. Backstage, Marant declared her inspiration to be a cultured girl traveling the globe for her summer holiday and what she would pack in her suitcase. Ah, that’s it. This collection evokes that yearning to see the world, but on one’s own terms. Some of us get to do it, some of us only dream of it, but all of us can wear Marant.

Marant’s cozy, colorful knitwear was a big winner. The loose, intentionally imperfect stitch looks like a weather-beaten, well-traveled version of a fancier cashmere knit. Bleach-splattered coats and jeans will also hold up on a globetrotter’s journey, but they look even better when done up with graffiti spray too. Embroidered jackets and Moroccan lace overlays signal the worldly aspect of this collection. Minidresses paired with oversized coats are what our sophisticated traveler might wear on a night out in Ibiza, and the choker necklace dress is best reserved for a party in New York City. The chain mail pieces and the boyfriend button-ups added a nice masculine touch to this collection. This is going to be another favorite of the young jetsetter, much like her previous work has been.
