Nina Ricci Spring 2012
Peter Copping tried something different for the current Nina Ricci brand, but this difference landed him in historical Nina Ricci territory. This move was quite purposeful, after Copping decided to revive prints from decades past that were created by Zina de Plagny – Ricci’s favored print collaborator in the 1930s. While this was undeniably a Nina Ricci collection – with all of the feminine allure that description entails – it was also a needed updating of the new Ricci look.
That being said, each look on this runway was fascinating. Details were either blown up or shrunk down in a myriad of unexpected (but ultimately refreshing) ways. While it touched on some popular SS12 trends like bra tops paired with full skirts and sheer overlays, it also had a lot of new looks in the mix like flirty chiffon peplum details, silk slope-shouldered jackets, exaggerated asymmetrical hems on mini cocktail dresses and shiny jacquard coats and skirts. The best look among them all was the midi-length, folded leather skirt with giant bucket pockets outfitted with zippers. There were also some gorgeous eveningwear dresses like a ruched frock in midnight blue with beaded straps and a flowing dress in hibiscus red. Oh, and we can’t forget the Zina prints. They came in astonishing, colorful confetti looks and muted, wallpaper florals. Copping’s pull from the closets of history intermixed with keen modern details makes this one of Ricci’s best collections to date.
