Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Stella McCartney Spring 2012

Stella McCartney builds on the success of last season with skintight dresses, sheer tuxedo suits, and silky pajamas. Her aim was to celebrate “energy, freshness, and fitness” and the overt sportswear vibe in this collection transmitted that message loud and clear.

Her fusion of sensuality, functionality, and artisanal details like scalloped edges, asymmetrical tailoring, unfinished hems, and curlicue ripples created a knock-out collection. The clothes were peppered with these keen details, and were all the better for it. The curlicue ripples bisected several smocked frocks into sections of bold contrasting color. The pajama-like suits came down the runway bedecked in pointillismic specks and dashes of paisley. While these were innovative ways to present a retro edge to the collection, the clothes themselves were strictly modern. This fusion of sportswear and lingerie and her signature clingy silhouette created a radiantly clear “McCartney” collection, but tinged with the cheer of springtime.
