Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Valentino Spring 2012

Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri just succeeded in dispelling any suspicions that they may not be up for the task of running a house as famous and deeply rooted as Valentino. Their Spring/Summer 2012 collection is one of the prettiest things that has come down the runway all season, imbued with both a tender fragility and serene confidence. Something about this collection recalls the innocent virgin character in an Ingmar Bergman film.

A hint of bohemian peasantry ran through the dresses that came outfitted in wallpaper detailed cut-outs and diamond paper doll trim on the bottom of the hems. Most of the looks on the Valentino runway were comprised almost entirely of lace, sheer, gazar silk, or thin laser-cut leather. Floral appliqués, wispy abstract strands of fabric, and baroque cut-outs looked beautiful, original, and fresh in the hands of Piccioli and Chiuri. There was nothing obtuse or gaudy about this wearable collection. Instead, it was imbued with a loose, comfortable sensuality. These clothes belong to a woman who has long since given up trying too hard, but nonetheless these are clothes for a woman.
