Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Anne Valerie Hash Spring 2012

Some designers eschew the season they’re designing for. Spaghetti strap dresses for fall/winter? No thank you. Anne Valerie Hash has a knack for staying on message every season, and this is no exception. This SS12 RTW collection transmits a clear spring message with its airy, light separates and lively palette of pastels, royal blues, and nudes.

There is a languid ease to this collection, as if one could wrap themselves up in one of Hash’s flowing garments without agonizing over fit. The drape of the tops and pants on display here is sensual and feminine, but made more dramatic and interesting by the off-kilter presentation: one side of a hem is tucked while the other side hangs loose; one cuff is rolled higher than the other.

A few items on the runway seem to take their cues from religious garb, like wide monk sleeves and Buddhist-inspired collars. Though the wearer is certainly a little more wild than her clothing would suggest. She’s a preacher’s daughter, willing to look prim for a Sunday ceremony, but the sleeves roll up and the neckline dips lower when the sun goes down.

There is a certain timelessness that pervades this collection, though it certainly retains an air of modernity. The relaxed fit, the soft fabrics, and the natural breeziness of the clothes render them perfect for either the 21st century or the 20th.
