Paris Fashion Week Coverage
Chanel Spring 2012 Couture
As a departure from previous collections, Chanel lightens up this season, literally. The set of the show “takes to the skies” in a reconstruction of a posh Jetstream cabin interior.
While the show notes trumpet the fact that this collection comes in 150 different shades of blue, what it fails to mention is how stunning some of these shades really are. One dress came in a shade of blue that’s like the electric hue that crackles in the wake of a lightning bolt, while another was the exact same exotic blue of the tiles in the Raj’s Palace in Mysore, India.
With “blue” as its base, the sportif, youthful mood of this collection was supplied by The Kaiser’s obsession with juvenescence. His increasingly “slouchy” collections come imprinted with a flippant attitude – hands defiantly in low-slung pockets, lackadaisical posture, etc. Yet, this one is slightly different. Its lines are so crisp and clean that it loses most of the slouchy aspect, but hands are still kept firmly in pockets (when pockets are present).
Complicated overlays, contrasting panels of opaque and sheer fabric, ornate embroidery, tiered layers, and cheerful bell sleeves are just a few of the masterful touches that can be witnessed in this collection. However, it’s the crisp, tidy details on the clothing – the sturdy buttons, the tidy bows – that imbue them with an unfussy, no-nonsense feeling. At the end of the show, Lagerfeld shrugged off the depression symbology of an all-blue collection by saying, “I don't have the blues” which rings true because this sophisticated collection clearly comes from a well-adjusted mind.
