Elie Saab Fall 2011 Couture
Elie Saab's fall couture collection glittered against a striking ice blue backdrop, against which stunning column gowns crackled like lightning. There was a notable tone shift from his last collection, which was darker and more subdued. For fall, Saab lightened his palette and fabric choices. This decision to "lighten up" resulted in an ethereal, magical collection that proves fashion doesn't have to be avant-garde to be interesting.
Sparkling rivulets of crystal beading ran down the length of airy gowns like dewdrops on a spider's web. Pale shades of cream and blue gossamer gowns radiated light. Dresses were expertly tucked and draped into a variety of looks (including a backless version for every color in the collection) that were each as refreshing as a dip in a cool mountain spring. Branches of embellishment climbed down the front of tawny beige frocks, while a sea of Aegean blue dresses shimmered with beading that twinkled like fireflies against an inky teal evening sky. The final look, Saab’s usual virginal bride, walked out with a hands-on-hips stance transmitting a message of powerful femininity.
