Paris Fashion Week Coverage

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2012 Couture

Amy Winehouse’s death in 2011 had an odd effect on pop culture. It was one of those tragic stories where everyone sees it coming, but when it actually happens, it’s just about the saddest thing ever. Jean Paul Gaultier pays tribute to the singer for his Spring Couture collection, in what is actually a rather joyful and powerful homage to her signature style.

The models trotted the runway in winged eyeliner, sporting bouffant beehives in every shade of the rainbow. Some models, using a cigarette as an accessory, captured the defiant attitude of Winehouse perfectly as a doo-wop quartet covering her songs provided the soundtrack for the show. This was a rock-meets-rockabilly collection with a nod to Oscar Wilde dandyism thrown into the mix. Corset waists were popular on the JPG runway, as were tuxedo blazers, deconstructed suits, varsity jackets, and suggestive lingerie. It was a sultry, sexy, and blazingly colorful collection that ended with the models wearing veils, and yet, they were each smiling. While the tribute is heartfelt, it was far more uplifting than it was depressing.
