Valentino Fall 2011 Couture
From a distance, this collection looks like a vague palette of neutrals with a few shots of red thrown in for a lark. But, up close, the astonishing details of each garment bespeak a master hand at work. For this reason, Valentino's latest collection deserves a much closer look.
The show opens with a beguiling chevron-print, sequin studded gown that is one part 70s disco, one part prairie-prim, and one part 20s flapper. The beading and details on the following gowns are jaw-dropping, with work so precise and fine as to be overwhelming. Princess coats got a sweet makeover in textures of silver lamé and black velvet with oversized gold appliquéd dots. A beautifully threaded, woven, and crocheted top met with a skirt in a puff of sheer chiffon. Even the bright Valentino Red dress looked delicate and fragile. Cascading silks and exquisitely patterned tapestry dresses in velvet virtually floated down the runway. Valentino's latest transports us to a fairy tale world of virginal, pure aesthetics, and regal garb.
